Gamer Foreplay

January 30, 2009

Otherwise known as trailers!  Got this Batman: Arkham Asylum trailer which will make you cream your pants.  I think they’ve captured the dark gritty art style that the new Batman movies is made of.  The fact that they are producing this game rather than a shitty game based off Dark Knight like they did with Batman Begins.  Lets hope it plays well because, lets face it, Batman deserves a really good current gen video game and its a long time coming.

Legend of Zelda on the silver screen?

January 28, 2009

Came upon this video on YouTube and I’m disappointed to reveal that it is not a real trailer.  I didn’t see this last April but apparently this was IGN’s April fools joke.  I think it looks pretty damn good for it being merely a hoax.  My only complaint would be the guy they chose to play Link.  Excluding that one grievance, I’d be all for seeing this turned into a legitamite film.  I’m sure most gamers would agree with me and if done correctly this could be a huge hit.  So come on!  Who’s gonna step up to the challenge?!  Paramount?  Warner Bros.

And for those of you who haven’t played the Zelda games…  What are ya waiting for.  There are many Zelda titles but if you only play one Ocarina of Time should be it, its without a doubt the most highly regarded piece in the series.  Its a fantastic franchise and can easily be considered a piece of the foundation that helped build the base for the video game industry we know and love today.

And if you’ve not seen/played THIS yet I suggest you hurry up and do so! I had a proverbial blast playing it.

Thank you Penny-Arcade.

Indie games are awesome!

January 28, 2009

As proof I bring forth an indie game I recently stumbled upon called “The Legend of Princess”.

Quite certainly a thinly veiled homage to the Legend of Zelda series. Particularly “Zelda II: The Adventure of Link”(although not nearly as frustrating or soul destroying).

As you can see, “Legend of Princess” it’s beautifully crafted in 16 bit graphics and plays in a pseudo RPG/platformer side scrolling fashion. The animations are fantastic and the game overall feels very comfortable. It may not be challenging, but it provides a small escape in the form of mindless fun. And of course Zelda fans will enjoy the fun quirks and similarities with the actual series.

Here is a handy link in which you can partake in the limited(only one level) fun.

And of course the creator, whom we have to thank for this little gem.

Ever wished you had the ability to create portals just like the test subjects in Portal?!  Well now you can!!  Ok…. maybe you can’t, but it sure does look like the real deal.  You can even switch back and forth from blue to orange portals.  Apparently this guy Volpin made this for his girlfriends cosplay outfit.  Here is a Flicker album with shots of the gun at different angles and with different lighting.

Here is another gallery with some shots of the gun as well as a couple other props the dude has made.  The Hylian Shield is pretty awesome too.  Apparently the guy does comissions so who knows. Maybe he can start mass producing these replica portal guns and then use the cash to figure out a way to make them shoot actual portals!  its definitely an impressive piece, keep up the good work!

Congrats to President Obama.  There is a lot of work to be done in the next 4 years, lets hope he can keep up with his promises.  I think a lot of his opponents will be surprised by him.  Lets hope I’m not wrong.

I-Fluid caught my eye and few weeks ago and I narrowly avoided purchasing on the spot.  But when I was puruesing Steam during their post holiday sale and I saw them offering it for only 4.99 I just couldn’t pass it up.  So far I’ve made it to level 5 but every time I try to start the stage the game fails and I have to CtrlAltDel it.  I hope to figure out what the issue is and fix it so that i can complete the game. (Once I do you can expect a review)  Lets hope that the rest of the game can provide the same addictive platforming/puzzle solving action that the first 4 levels have!

Oh….. and if anyone wants to play a little Left 4 Dead with me I’d love some competent allies.  I’ve come across a few decent players through the random match-ups, but most have been idiots.  My gamer tag is Artsoldier1 so feel free to hit me up!

I’m not necessarily a “fan” of machinima but I don’t hate it.  However, this one blows my mind.  It is without a doubt the best looking machinima I have ever seen.  For those of you who are asking yourselves, “what the hell is machinima?” let me explain.  Actually….  No I’m not gonna explain because I don’t feel like it.  Let me point you here instead….  The Machinima Faq!!!.  That should answer any questions you have on the subject.

Check this shit out…

Lights, Music, Puzzles!

January 9, 2009

I came across this puzzle game courtesy of Patrick Beja through Twitter.  It is a pretty neat little game and had me addicted to it almost instantly.  The game is Auditorium and it is a product of a Philadelphia based agency known as Cipher Prime.  The final version isn’t completed yet but the demo is available for play.

Here’s how it works…..

The player uses different command nodes, such as directionals (up, down, left, right) and special ones (attract, repel, deflect, etc.), to direct their “flow”.  The flow is a series of white lines that stream from a certain starting point in each stage.  It is your job to direct the flow into the audio containers in the stage.  The trick is getting your flow to travel through all the containers at the same time.  As the flow passes through each container it slowly fills it and once it reaches its capacity the container adds its piece of audio to the stage’s soundtrack.

As the game progresses the stages become more complicated by adding more containers and different command nodes as well as adding “color spheres” and other obstacles.  When the flow passes through the color sphere it changes to the corresponding color, which then allows the flow to activate and fill the audio containers that match that color.

The images while very simplistic are truly stunning.  The palette is composed mostly of bright vibrant colors, which are displayed mainly through the flow, which leap out at you off the black background.  The organic movements of the flow really give it a life like quality.   The flow is the “main character” of this game and the color and fluidity in its movements don’t let you forget it.

If you enjoy the visuals then the audio is gonna blow you away.  Unless you don’t play, they key is you make the music by playing the levels.  Each part of the symphony relies on you leading the flow through each audio container.

The game starts out easy but quickly becomes challenging and has the potential to keep you stumped for hours.  I personally breezed through the early stages but by the end of the demo was easily spending 20 or so minutes on each stage.  I’ve gone back and played the demo all the way through two or three times now so it definitely gets easier the more time you spend with it.

Its in beta now but hopefully the full game will be released soon.  There are rumors that final game content will include user level creation and custom soundtracks.  An i-phone version is also rumored to be in the works.
